Laptop or desktop for the makerspace CAD PC?
Our position, and the portability counterpoint.
Our position
A gaming laptop thermally throttles after 10-15 minutes of Fusion 360 render time. A desktop does not. If the workstation will live in one place (which it will), buy a desktop, not a laptop. Save the laptop purchase for scenarios where the PC needs to travel.

Puget Systems sustained-workload tests
Broadly agreesPuget's thermal-throttling data on gaming laptops is extensive. Desktops maintain clock speeds that laptops cannot.
Flex-space / mobile programs
Nuanced / mixedIf the program genuinely needs to travel (mobile maker cart, field trips), a laptop is required. Different use case.
Desk-space-constrained programs
Pushes backA laptop plus external monitor takes less desk space than a tower. In a cramped room, worth considering.
