Does a pegboard need standoff spacers?
Our position, and the 'it might work' counterpoint.
Our position
The hooks need space behind the board to engage. A pegboard bolted flat to the wall will not accept standard hooks. Use 1/2" standoff spacers or a dedicated mounting kit. This is a surprisingly common mistake.

Direct-mount for heavy-duty pegboard
Nuanced / mixedSome pegboard products (Wall Control, metal pegboards) use different hook geometry that works flush against the wall. Product-specific exception.
Nothing to disagree with here - this is physics
Pushes backIf anyone tells you a standard 1/8" or 1/4" pegboard does not need standoffs, they are wrong. No reputable source disagrees.
