Our position

The hooks need space behind the board to engage. A pegboard bolted flat to the wall will not accept standard hooks. Use 1/2" standoff spacers or a dedicated mounting kit. This is a surprisingly common mistake.

Every major DIY retailer's pegboard install guide specifies standoffs or furring strips. The universal guidance confirms this is not optional.

Why trust it: Retailer education resource, reflects install failure modes.

Standard pegboard hook sizing assumes a 1/4" air gap behind the board. Physics, not opinion.

Why trust it: Product-spec level reality.

Some pegboard products (Wall Control, metal pegboards) use different hook geometry that works flush against the wall. Product-specific exception.

Why trust it: Product category-specific, valid for specific products.

If anyone tells you a standard 1/8" or 1/4" pegboard does not need standoffs, they are wrong. No reputable source disagrees.
