No two sets of teeth share the same shape, spacing, or wear, so a bite mark is a biological signature. Pressing pretend teeth into playdough and comparing the marks to the clue cookie finds the match.
The kind of shoe points to a whole group of people, but the exact tread - the shapes inside the lines and the weird little tabs on the back - isolates ONE shoe and therefore one suspect. Many suspects can wear the very same brand, but matching the tread is what tells them apart even more!
Under a magnifier, color, thickness, and curl tell human hair from animal fur. Those tiny details prove who - or what - was at the scene.
Friction ridges form before birth and never change. Every print is one of three families: a hill (arch), a wave (loop), or a swirl-target (whorl). Matching the crime-scene print to its family narrows the suspects.
Marker ink looks like one color but is a blend of pigments. Water climbs the paper (capillary action) and carries each pigment at a different speed, leaving a rainbow-like color profile.
The ransom note was written in a clear chemical, hidden in plain sight. Brushing on the developer starts a reaction that changes the ink so it suddenly appears.
