The Challenge: Launch high and far, but land as close as possible to where you started!
⚠ Minimum Distance Rule ⚠
Your rocket must travel at least 50 feet from the launch pad before returning. Straight-up launches don't count!
Setup
- Mark the launch pad clearly (cone, flag, or tape)
- Have a spotter watch where rockets travel farthest
- Note the wind direction before starting
- Measuring tape ready for final distances
How to Play
- Check wind direction (toss grass in the air)
- Decide your launch direction and angle
- Launch! Spotter confirms it went at least 50 feet
- Measure from launch pad to where rocket landed
- Each player gets 3 attempts
- Closest landing to launch pad wins!
Wind Strategy
Into the Wind
Wind pushes rocket back toward pad on descent
High Angle
More time in air = more wind drift
No Wind?
Launch straight up at 80-85° angle
Strong Wind
Aim slightly into wind, medium angle
Scoring Options
- Simple: Closest to pad wins
- Points: Within 5 ft = 10 pts, 10 ft = 7 pts, 20 ft = 4 pts, 30 ft = 2 pts
- Bull's Eye: Actually hitting the launch pad = instant win!
- Cumulative: Add up distances from all 3 launches - lowest total wins
Science Connection: This challenge combines projectile motion with aerodynamics. The wind affects light rockets more as they slow down at the peak of flight. Understanding wind and using it to your advantage is real aerospace engineering!
