Our position

Do not swap the official 2x AA battery holder for alternatives. Snap Circuits are spec'd for 3V from 2x AA. Higher voltage damages the light-sensitive IC, lower voltage kills half the projects.

There are legitimate accessory battery packs from Elenco. Third-party packs at different voltages are not the same thing.

Elenco FAQs

Broadly agrees

Elenco's own FAQ documents the voltage spec and warns against swapping to non-official packs. Straightforward manufacturer guidance.

Why trust it: Manufacturer, but the voltage-spec claim is an engineering fact, not marketing.

Adult hobbyists occasionally mod Snap Circuits with higher-voltage supplies for specific experiments. For classroom use, the mods are not worth the component-death risk.

Why trust it: Adult hobbyist community; their context is not the same as a classroom.

Pitsco's education materials around Snap Circuits stick to the official pack recommendations. No push to upsell battery accessories.

Why trust it: Long-running educational reseller; commercial incentive is toward reliability, not upsell.
