Knockoff "metal robotics" kits?
Our position, and other voices worth reading before you decide.
Our position
Knockoff kits that copy the VEX metal-and-plastic aesthetic but lack VEXcode compatibility cannot participate in any sanctioned VIQRC or VRC event. They are not a substitute for real VEX when your program wants to compete.
For a purely teaching classroom that will never enter a tournament and has an adult who can wire up a third-party microcontroller, some of these kits can deliver decent mechanical engineering learning. That is a specific niche, not the default.

Generic STEM construction kits on Amazon
Nuanced / mixedSome metal-construction kits are legitimately fine as free-build engineering toys. They are just not equivalent to VEX IQ for a programmable robotics curriculum.
