Our position

Do not try. Buy the charging case that comes with the class pack.

Sphero Mini, BOLT, and BOLT+ charge inductively through individual charging bases. One robot on a power strip works fine. Sixteen robots on a power strip trips the breaker, kills the strip, and leaves the class with no robots ready for first period. The charging case is not an upsell - it is the infrastructure that keeps the class set usable.

Reputable sources worth reading before you decide. Labels reflect our honest read of each source's general stance, not direct quotes.

Sphero sells class packs with the charging hub included because singles-plus-strip does not actually work at scale. The packaging reflects real deployment experience.

Why trust it: Vendor packaging reflects reality.

Experienced makerspace teachers have built DIY multi-port USB charging trays that work fine. That is a makerspace project, not a default. Most schools do not have the in-house electronics skills to safely roll their own.

Why trust it: Valid for maker-strong schools. Not a safe default.

If you own 2-3 Spheros total, individual chargers on a power strip are fine. The case is not necessary. This argument disappears above 6 robots.

Why trust it: Valid at very small scale. Breaks at class-pack scale.
