Our position

VEX V5 is designed for high school. For middle schoolers, the complexity and cost are both overkill. VEX IQ is the appropriate middle-school platform.

There is a narrow case for advanced 8th-graders transitioning to V5 in the spring semester as a bridge to 9th-grade VRC. That is a specific individualized move, not a program-wide purchase.

Reputable sources worth reading before you decide. Labels reflect our honest read of each source's general stance, not direct quotes.

VEX's own product page labels V5 as grades 9-12. The grade-range design is deliberate.

Why trust it: Manufacturer, and the complexity is genuinely age-appropriate to high school.

VIQRC (the IQ league) is middle school; VRC (the V5 league) is high school and above. Competition age brackets reflect the design intent.

Why trust it: Competition-rule authority.

Some elite 8th-grade teams do start transitioning to V5 early. If the kids are ready and the coach is ready, there is no hard rule against it - but it is not a program default.

Why trust it: Real veteran coach experience, narrow applicability.
